How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint With WanderWomen

Let’s talk climate action!

In a time going from a global pandemic almost straight into a next political crisis with huge impending changes for us all, when actually the world needed to focus and invest into climate solutions, it is down to us to remember what there is for us to do, not to give up, but to pull together as a community and make the changes we can! Most of us will have felt the impact of rising petrol prices already.

As a WanderWomen community we have the responsibility to work together to tackle climate change, and collectively act on carbon reduction, and here is how:

What is already happening

At WanderWomen it has always been important to us that you can reach the wild places where Experiences and Events take place, by public transport. With most our locations in East Lothian that is the case. What we also have always encouraged is car-sharing, and that has worked well, with obvious interruptions during the last 2 years.

Many women walk and cycle to WanderWomen events already – improving their health by integrating active travel into their lives in an easy and convenient way.

We pledge that we will make sure that locations will be on bus or train routes and within walking distance of train stations or bus stops. We also promise that we will always offer seats in cars that will go when there is no public transport option available. Those options will be communicated via the We are WanderWomen Facebook group, as well as on Instagram stories. Please also ask upon booking, if you need help with transport, and we will see whether someone can help out with lifts.

Leave no trace

In the wild places where WanderWomen experiences take place, we always care about how we leave the natural spaces we use. We leave no trace – we respect and care for the nature around us, take litter home and act responsibly. Foods available at WanderWomen are always vegetarian and vegan, too.

Consumerism

If you know Anna, Director of WanderWomen, you will know how passionate she is about reducing, re-using and recycling. She likes to talk, educate and convey lessons that she learns from nature – with one of the favourite lessons from the sea being how we already have all that we need. To swim in the sea, we don’t need all the items that get advertised and sold to us (the same applies to cycling/hiking/any other sport!). You don’t need all the gear to call yourself a wild woman swimming in the sea. Being creative with the many items that already live in our wardrobes, you can come up with your own solutions, that don’t require falling into the consumerist traps that are everywhere! Anna will always be happy to talk this through with you, if you have any doubt!

All you need is less

Are you aware of the co-benefits of these various climate actions?

Other than enhancing your wellbeing and mental health by opting for active travel, car sharing or using public transport instead, you also contribute to the reduction of noise and air pollution.

Coming to a WanderWomen experience you can also mostly rely on the fact that the women you might end up car-sharing with are like-hearted women with similar interests, and you might even make new friends by sharing transport!

If the car is your only option, remember you can find training and resources to drive more efficiently, and ultimately use less petrol. The Energy Saving Trust for example offers some valuable resources!

Maybe you will find it interesting that there are local e-car rental places like Co-Wheels?

Climate change is simple, serious, solvable. We can do our bit. As individuals and together!
